Migration registration

All foreign citizens (including citizens of CIS, or «СНГ» in Russian*) willing to enter the Russian Federation must act in accordance with migration legislation of the Russian Federation.

In this section you can find relevant information about: documents required for visiting the Russian Federation; documents you have to obtain as a foreign student while studying in Russia; how you can get and extend these documents and how to get your document re-issued in case of losing documents; how to validate the permission for leaving Moscow properly; laws for foreign students studying in Russia which you should be familiar with.

Student responsibilities

1. Keep track of the expiration dates of all your documents

2. Inform the Department of Visa and Migration Support of Foreign Students and the Dean’s Office of your faculty in the following cases:

  • Leaving the Russian Federation for holidays or other reasons
  • Entering the Russian Federation
  • Inability to return on time from holidays or other trips
  • Travelling within Russia and registering at the temporary location, if staying in another city more than 7 days
  • Hospitalization
  • Loss or replacement of any documents
  • Expiration of any documents
  • Obtaining Russian Citizenship
  • Change of name or surname
  • Change of residential address
  • Change of mobile phone number or email address
  • Receiving a temporary residence permit (RVP/RVPO) or residence permit
  • If administrative measures are applied to the student by the Ministry of Internal Affairs (or «МВД» in Russian)

3. Always carry the following documents with you:

  • Passport
  • Migration card (except for citizens of the Republic of Belarus)
  • Fingerprinting certificate (except for citizens of the Republic of Belarus)
  • Detachable part of the migration registration notification
  • Medical insurance policy

*Citizens of CIS — citizens of the Commonwealth of Independent Countries. CIS member-countries currently are Azerbaijan, Armenia, Belarus, Qazaqstan, the Kyrgyz Republic, Moldavia, Russia, Tadjikistan, Uzbekistan. Ukraine and Turkmenistan are also CIS participants.
