Entering the Russian Federation

June 24 2025

Entering another State also means going through customs. Besides your passport and visa security service will also check your migration card* (except for citizens of the Republic of Belarus). You can get it on the plane (train/bus), before going through passport control in the airport or train station.

According to current migration law of the Russian Federation, every foreign citizen and stateless person must get (and fill in) the migration card:

Necessary: check your personal data written in the migration card: your name and surname must be exactly the same as in your visa or its translation. If you found a mistake, immediately ask border control service officers

Check the purpose of your visit. In foreign students card the purpose of visit should be marked as «учёба/education». If you found a mistake, immediately ask border control service officers or duty consulate employee at the place of getting migration card

If the purpose of your stay is written incorrectly, it will be considered violation of rules on stay in Russia!

Affix your personal signature to related box of your migration card

Border control officers will put an entry stamp on your migration card

To check the data written in your migration card (or if you filled in the card yourself) see an example. Make sure that the purpose of your visit is marked as «учёба/education».

Important:

1. In case a foreign student cannot write in Russian, migration card can be filled in with Latin letter according to the data provided in passport or another document of identification;

2. If you are travelling to Russia with transfer in the Republic of Belarus, you have to obtain a migration card before entering the Russian Federation (ask a border control officer in the Republic of Belarus);

3. If you found a mistake in your migration card after leaving the place of getting it (airport/train station), you must return and ask officers to fix it (or to give you another migration card)
