Achievements and awards. One of the most remarkable ensembles of the Choral department is the Gnesins’ Ensemble of contemporary choral music «Altro coro». It was founded in September 2010 and was made up of students and alumni of the Choral Department interested in the choral works composed in the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. The task of the ensemble is to discover and disseminate the choral works that were unknown in Russia before. The first concert took place on December 17, 2010 in the Concert Hall of the Gnesins’ Academy. Awards in Competitions: Gold Diploma and title of winner in «Chamber Choirs» nomination of International Contemporary Choir Music Festival «Canti veris Praga» (Czech Republic, 2012), VI Level Gold Diploma of the IV International Anton Bruckner Choir Competition (Austria, 2013), Grand Prix of the International Contemporary Choir Music Festival «Canti veris Praga» (Czech Republic, 2014), Grand Prix of the XXIX International Schubert Choir Competition (Austria, 2014), V Level Gold Diploma, title of winner in «Chamber Choirs» nomination and Jury Special Prize of the IX International Brahms Choir Competition (Germany, 2015), Title of Champion in «Chamber Choirs» nomination of the IX World Choir Games (Russia, 2016), Grand Prix in «Chamber Choirs» nomination and Grand Prix in «Contemporary Music» nomination of the International Champions Competition «Grand Prix of Nations» (Germany, 2017), Gold Medal in «Chamber Choirs» nomination and Gold Medal in «Contemporary Music» nomination of the X World Choir Games (South Africa, 2018), Grand Prix in «Musica Sacra» nomination of the of the International Champions Competition «Grand Prix of Nations» (Sweden, 2019). Artistic Director and Conductor of the ensemble «Altro Coro» – Rector of the Gnesins’ Russian Academy of Music in Moscow, Prof. Aleksandr Ryzhinskiy, Doctor of Arts.

Teaching staff. High-quality training is provided by the experienced teaching staff including Professors, Associate Professors, Doctors of Sciences, PhDs, People’s Artists of the RF and the USSR, Honored Artists and Art Workers of the RF, laureates of the RF Government Award, the National Award of the RF and the USSR, Honored Workers of Higher Education of the RF, Honored Workers of Higher Professional Education of the RF, laureates of all-Russian and international competitions.

Facilities and resources. The academy has all the necessary training facilities and resources to ensure high quality of the educational process: technical equipment and instruments, a sufficient number of educational materials, computers, a reading hall, numerous concert halls, a good library and a record library that are regularly replenished with new editions and audio and video recordings.

Education. Academic activity is maintained at a high level due to creative and concert performance activities. Students regularly attend concerts and master classes of outstanding conductors, undertake teaching, performance and research internships, participate in interuniversity student scientific conferences. The teaching staff members use student-centered and practice-oriented approaches, give creative interactive classes. Teaching internship is undertaken in cooperation with educational institutions of Moscow where students consolidate the acquired knowledge and develop teaching skills. Senior students undertake their performance (passive) internship in the Yurlov Russian State Choir under the direction of Honored Art Worker of the Russian Federation, Professor G.A. Dmitriak. 

Research. Students acquire scientific work experience participating in research activities of the Department hosting scientific and practical conferences, seminars devoted to choral art and art of conducting, art history, musical pedagogy and artistic performance. All important events in choral art of Moscow and Gnesins Russian Academy of Music are covered in monthly news releases. Besides, the department holds Moscow and all-Russian interuniversity student scientific conferences devoted to various pedagogical and performance issues, with mandatory publication of a collection of conference articles. The main topic is “Choral Music Today: the Dialogue Between Science and Practice.”

Strategic partners. The Department closely cooperates with the the Yurlov Russian State Choir, the Moscow Musical Theater Helikon-Opera, the Novaya Opera Theater, the Bolshoi Theater of Russia, the State Chapel of Moscow named after V.A. Sudakov, the Speransky Opera Studio Theater, the Tchaikovsky Bolshoi Symphony Orchestra, the Svetlanov State Symphony Orchestra of Russia, the Nekrasov Russian Folk Instruments Orchestra, the Osipov National Russian Folk Instruments Orchestra, the Russian Weaves State Academic Orchestra of Soloists, etc.
