On September 1st, the Gnesin Russian Academy of Music opened its doors to new students. This year, 621 people were enrolled in higher professional education programs. The celebration began in the Academy's Concert Hall, where the first-year students were welcomed by the Deputy Minister of Culture of the Russian Federation, Sergei Pershin, the President of the Gnessin Academy, Galina Mayarovskaya, and the Rector, Aleksandr Ryzhinskii.
Sergei Pershin highlighted Gnesinka's international status:
«Students from more than 50 countries study here. These people learn about Russian culture through communication with their classmates, learn kindness, and, we hope, will go on to carry this with them. Russian students, please do everything you can to help our guests from other countries fall in love with our country. And those who have come to study here, don’t be shy to share the warmth you receive.»
This year, the Academy continues to celebrate the 130th anniversary of the Gnesin’s system of music education. Aleksandr Ryzhinskii reminded the audience of an agreement under which all Russian philharmonic societies and music theaters, together with the Association of Musical Educational Institutions, will work on preserving and developing the unique educational system, which was developed largely thanks to the Gnesin family.
The fest itself included the award ceremony of scholarships from the President and the Rector of the Gnesin Academy. Following tradition, Academy teachers performed at the concert in honor of the new academic year. To conclude the formal part of the celebration, the First Vice-Rector of the Gnesin Academy, Svyatoslav Golubenko, held an organizational meeting with freshmen, after which the students went to their respective faculties to receive their long-awaited student IDs.
