Biography

Teacher, musicologist.

In 1973 he graduated from the Pskov Music College, in 1978 from the Leningrad Conservatory, and in 1985 from its postgraduate programme (his research supervisor in both the Conservatory and the postgraduate course was E. A. Ruchyevskaya).

He began his teaching career in 1977 at the Mussorgsky Leningrad Music College, and subsequently taught at the Kazan Conservatory and Tver State University.

In 1987 he defended his Candidate dissertation at the Leningrad Conservatory: «The Formation of the Artistic Text in the Works of P. I. Tchaikovsky (Based on Manuscripts of Works from the 1890s)».

Since 1994 he has worked in the Gnesin Russian Academy of Music, in the Department of Music History (since 1999 as Associate Professor). He teaches the courses «History of Russian Music of the Nineteenth and Early Twentieth Centuries» for musicologists and performers; the special course «Music Source Studies and Textology» for musicologists (specialist and bachelor levels); methodology of teaching music literature (Faculty of History and Theory, all profiles); archival and teaching practice (for the same students); and also a special‑subject class, and he supervises Master’s theses.

Over the course of his work, eleven students have completed his special‑subject class; four Candidate qualification projects by performing‑artist postgraduates (Morkovina, Kotnova, Saykovich, Palaznik) and eight Master’s dissertations have been written and defended under his supervision.

His principal scholarly interests are Russian music of the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, and questions of source studies and textology.

He has contributed to the creation of textbooks and teaching aids in music literature for teachers and students of children’s music schools, schools of the arts, and music colleges, and is author of the teaching commentaries to the audiovisual piano‑vocal scores of the operas «The Snow Maiden», «Eugene Onegin», and «Ruslan and Lyudmila» (Moscow, MID Landgraf, 2007, 3 vols., 88 printer’s sheets).
