Biography

Vasily Stepanov was born in Kazan. He is a graduate of the Moscow Conservatory (studying in the classes of Professor Natalia Shakhovskaya and Boris Andrianov) and of the assistant traineeship at the Moscow Conservatory (class of Boris Andrianov). He also studied at the Queen Sofía Higher School of Music in the class of Jens‑Peter Maintz (Madrid).

He has appeared with renowned conductors, including Yuri Bashmet, Christian Knapp, Aleksandr Sladkovsky, Aleksandr Titov, Maxim Fedotov, Dimitris Botinis, Alim Shakhmametyev, Eduard Grach, Teodor Currentzis, Julian Gallant and Rustem Abyazov.

He has participated in masterclasses by Sergei Roldugin, David Geringas, Jens‑Peter Maintz, Martti Rousi, Gautier Capuçon, Nils Ullner and Thorleif Thedéen.

He is a laureate of international competitions, including winner of the Mravinsky Competition (St Petersburg, 2012) and the «Riga Classic Strings» Competition, and holder of the laureate title and Second Prize diploma of the Third All‑Russian Music Competition (Moscow, 2018).

He is a recipient of awards from the Minister of Culture of the Russian Federation.

He performs in the leading concert halls of Russia and has given solo recitals in the USA, Japan, Denmark, Spain, South Korea, Georgia, Estonia, Latvia, France, Tanzania, Serbia and Moldova. He is the author and initiator of a series of concerts dedicated to the memory of Natalia Shakhovskaya.

Since 2017 he has collaborated with theatre director Dmitry Krymov. He has taken part in recordings of Kirill Bodrov’s music for the films «Sobibor» (dir. K. Khabensky) and «Bratstvo» («Brotherhood», dir. P. Lungin).
