Biography

In 1987 she graduated from the Gnesin Music College with a specialisation in Academic Singing.

After graduating she became a soloist with the Moscow Academic Chamber Choir under People’s Artist of the USSR, Professor V. N. Minin. During her time with the choir she worked with renowned conductors and performed numerous large‑scale works by classical composers, including Mozart’s «Requiem» and Mass in C minor, Verdi’s «Requiem», Rossini’s «Messa di gloria» («Solemn Mass»), Beethoven’s Mass in C Major, Pergolesi’s and Vivaldi’s «Stabat Mater», and Bach’s Mass in B Minor.

In 1994 she graduated from the Gnesin State Musical and Pedagogical Institute (now the Gnesin Russian Academy of Music) in the class of N. Yu. Yureneva.

In 1995 she won Third Prize at the M. I. Glinka International Vocalists’ Competition in Ufa, and in 1998 she won the Giovanni Battista Viotti International Competition in Vercelli, Italy.

In February 2000 she made her Bolshoi Theatre debut as Musetta in Puccini’s «La Bohème» and subsequently joined the Bolshoi’s opera company.

Her roles include Tatyana (Tchaikovsky «Eugene Onegin»), Liù (Puccini «Turandot», directed by Francesca Zambello), Iolanta (Tchaikovsky «Iolanta»), Martha (Rimsky‑Korsakov «The Tsar’s Bride»), Maria (Tchaikovsky «Mazepa», directed by Robert Sturua), Mimì (Puccini «La Bohème»), Alice Ford (Verdi «Falstaff», directed by Giorgio Strehler), Cio‑Cio‑San (Puccini «Madama Butterfly»), and Micaëla (Bizet «Carmen», directed by David Pountney).

With the Bolshoi company she has toured to Saint Petersburg («Eugene Onegin»), Latvia and Sweden («Turandot»), and Italy as part of a concert ensemble. In 2006 she took part in a masterclass in Italy with the legendary soprano Renata Scotto.

In 2009 she received a prize from the Board of Trustees of the Bolshoi Theatre of Russia, chaired by A. Zhukov, for her outstanding performances as Micaëla («Carmen»), Cio‑Cio‑San («Madama Butterfly»), Musetta and Mimì («La Bohème»).

In 1998 she was awarded the honorary title «Honoured Artist of the Russian Federation», and in 2012 the title «People’s Artist of the Russian Federation».

L. V. Semenina plays an active role in cultural life and frequently appears in concerts with the Academic Ensemble of the National Guard of Russia and other renowned ensembles.
