Biography

He was born in 1987 in Ryazan. From 1996 to 1999 he studied at the First Central Music School at the Educational and Methodological Centre in the class of teacher N. M. Danshina. In 1998 he won the All‑Russian Bobylev Competition.

In 1999 he entered the Central Music School at the Moscow State Tchaikovsky Conservatory in the class of Professor A. N. Seleznyov, where he studied until 2003. In 2000, at the age of 12, he won the International A. Janigro Competition (Poreč, Croatia).

In 2003 he entered the Gnesin Moscow Special School of Music in the class of Professor, People’s Artist of Russia V. K. Tonkha. In January 2004 he became a laureate of the All‑Russian «New Names» Competition (Khanty‑Mansiysk). In 2004–2005 he was a diploma winner in the UNESCO programme both in chamber ensemble (class of Professor, People’s Artist of Russia T. A. Gaidamovich) and in cello (class of Professor, People’s Artist of Russia V. K. Tonkha).

In 2008 he won the 18th International Competition «Città di Barletta» (Barletta, Italy) both in the solo category and in chamber ensemble. In 2009 he was a diploma winner at the First All‑Russian Kozolupov Cello Competition.

In 2007 the cello‑piano duo «EUDEMONIA» with Serafima Ushakova was formed, and already in February–March 2008 it became a diploma winner at the First International Dmitri Shostakovich Chamber Ensemble Competition in Moscow. In December 2008 the duo won the International S. V. Rachmaninov Competition in St Petersburg, and in December 2009 it became a laureate of the First Open Competition‑Festival named after M. V. Yudina.

In 2013 he defended his master’s dissertation «Principles of Fingering on the Cello». In 2015 he won an International Competition in Ruza.

In 2020 a CD was released featuring the 24 Preludes for Cello and Piano by Sulkhan Tsintsadze, performed by Vladislav Provotar and Serafima Ushakova.

In 2022 the anthology «Bach, Schubert. Arrangements for Cello Ensemble» was published. In 2023, in co‑authorship with S. A. Ushakova, Associate Professor in the Chamber Ensemble and String Quartet Department of the Gnesin Russian Academy of Music, he published the anthology «Works by M. F. Gnesin for the Chamber Ensemble Class» and the article «Three Pieces for Cello and Piano, Op. 51‑bis by M. F. Gnesin: Style and Performance Interpretation» in the journal «Scholarly Notes» of the Gnesin Russian Academy of Music, 2023, No. 2 (45).

Since 2023 he has been the founder and artistic director of the cello quartet «AVM – Moscow Cello Ensemble» and is the author of many transcriptions written for this ensemble.

He is a member of the ensemble «WeAreTheCellos» and of the cello section of the National Philharmonic Orchestra of Russia. The ensemble performs regularly at leading Moscow venues, including the Small and Grand Halls of the Moscow Conservatory, the Schnittke Hall at the Moscow International House of Music, Zaryadye Concert Hall and others.

V. Provotar is a member of the juries of many Russian and international competitions, including:

  • the Jean Sibelius Competition (Turku, Finland);
  • the K. Y. Davydov Competition (Pushkino, Russia);
  • «VIVAT MUSICA» (Moscow, Russia);
  • «Magic Bow» (Ryazan, Russia);
  • «Slavic Encounters» (Balashikha, Russia).
