Biography

In 1971 he graduated from the Gnesin State Music College, clarinet class; in 1976 he graduated from the Gnesin State Music and Pedagogical Institute, saxophone class (becoming the first formally qualified saxophonist in the Soviet Union); and in 1982 he completed the assistant traineeship at the Moscow Tchaikovsky State Conservatory.

He has performed on the jazz stage since 1972.

He has appeared at international jazz festivals, including:

  • Belgrade ’75 and ’85;
  • Leipzig ’85;
  • Sofia ’86;
  • Prague ’86;
  • Jazz of the North Sea ’88 (the Netherlands);
  • Jakarta ’88 (Indonesia).

He has toured extensively throughout Russia and abroad.

He is a laureate of the All‑Union Competition for Wind Instrument Performers in Minsk (1979) and of the World Festival of Youth and Students in Havana (Cuba, 1978).

He is the author of the textbook Jazz Improvisation for Saxophone (Kifara, 1997; second edition Brass Collegium, Moscow, 2002).

He has performed with world‑renowned jazz artists including Joe Henderson, Bobby Hutcherson, Jerry Dodgion, Mel Lewis, Marshall Keys, Michael Brecker, Didier Lockwood, and others.

Since 1989 he has led the jazz ensemble Zelyonaya volna, whose members include students, graduates, and teachers of the Department of Instrumental Jazz Performance at the Gnesin Russian Academy of Music. The ensemble’s mission is to promote the performance skills of young jazz musicians.

Alexander Oseychuk is one of the founders of jazz education in Russia. From 1974 he taught at the Gnesin State Music College, and since 1984 he has taught saxophone, jazz ensemble, and the foundations of jazz improvisation at the Gnesin Russian Academy of Music.

In 1990 he undertook a two‑month teaching internship under the US–USSR Fulbright Scholars Programme at Berklee College of Music in Boston, one of the world’s leading jazz schools.

In 1997 Alexander V. Oseychuk was awarded the academic title of Professor, and in 1998 the honorary title Honoured Artist of the Russian Federation. Since 2007 he has been a member of the Union of Composers of Russia.

His students include laureates of All‑Russian and international jazz competitions such as Alexander Bril, Dmitry Bril, Alexei Kruglov, Anton Rumyantsev, Oleg Ostapchuk, Andrei Krasilnikov, Ovagem Sultanyan, Daniil Fedorov, Azat Bayazitov, Ilya Morozov, Viktor Geravker, Alexei Zhukov, Alexei Leon‑Reyes, and Anton Subbotin; laureates of All‑Russian jazz competitions such as Nikolai Belan, Zhanna Ilmer, Evgeny Pechnikov, Leonid Shupik, Anton Zaletayev, Evgeny Sokolovsky, Denis Shvytov, Dmitry Kondrashov, Oleg Grymov, Anton Zaitsev, Alexei Gordeev, Timur Nekrasov, Nikolai Moiseenko, Stanislav Dolzhkov, and Evgeny Voloshin; and well‑known jazz performers including Sergei Gurbelosvili, Nikolai Abramov, Nikolai Vinckevich, Pavel Grigoriev, Vladimir Kolkov, and many others.

Alexander V. Oseychuk is active in educational and methodological outreach, giving masterclasses at:

  • the Gathering of Teachers of Higher and Secondary Music Institutions of the Black Earth Region in Kursk (2009, 2010);
  • the All‑Russian Forum of Cultural‑Sector Educators in Ulyanovsk (2012);
  • the international jazz festival Aktobe Jazz in Kazakhstan (2007, 2009, 2011);
  • Krasnoyarsk College of Music (2011);
  • the Kazakh National University of Arts in Astana, with week‑long masterclasses in the Department of Popular Music (2011, 2012), among others.

He has served as chair of juries at international competitions, including:

  • Aktobe Jazz (2007, 2009, 2011, Kazakhstan);
  • the regional competition Snezhnoy blyuz in Norilsk (2006, 2007, 2008);
  • the All‑Russian competition Selmer for Children, jazz category (Moscow, 2010, 2013);
  • the international competition The Voice of the Saxophone in the Modern World 2011, jazz category (Moscow).

He has also served as a jury member at:

  • the All‑Russian Competition for Young Jazz Performers Jazz: Twenty‑First Century (Moscow, 2010);
  • the Delphic Games (2010, 2011);
  • the Russian Television International Competition Shchelkunchik (2011, 2013);
  • the Second All‑Russian Open Competition for Young Performers on Wind and Percussion Instruments Silver Trumpets (Moscow, 2011), among others.

He has chaired State Examination Boards at various educational institutions, including:

  • Ulyanovsk State College of Music (2010, 2012);
  • Moscow Regional College of Arts (2010, 2011, 2012);
  • Astrakhan State Conservatory (2013).
