Ekaterina N. Mochalova

Biography

In 2012 Ekaterina Mochalova graduated from the Gnesin Russian Academy of Music (class of Professor Vyacheslav Kruglov), and in 2016 she completed the Academy’s assistant traineeship programme.

In 2018 she defended her Candidate’s dissertation on the history of mandolin performance art. She is a First Prize laureate of the 1st All‑Russian Music Competition (Moscow, 2013), the 2nd Pavel Necheporenko International Competition (Moscow, 2016), and the mandolin performance competitions in Tokyo (2012) and Osaka (2013).

Since 2012 she has been a soloist of the N. P. Osipov National Academic Folk Orchestra of Russia, and since 2019 she has served as its leader.

She has given the first performances of works for domra and mandolin by Kuzma Bodrov, Mikhail Bronner, Kirill Volkov, Yefrem Podgaits, Alexander Tsygankov, and Alexander Tchaikovsky

She has appeared with various ensembles, including:

  • the E. F. Svetlanov State Academic Symphony Orchestra of Russia;
  • the «Moscow Soloists» Chamber Ensemble;
  • the State Chamber Orchestra «Moscow Virtuosi»;
  • the Hong Kong Chamber Orchestra;
  • the Madeira Classical Orchestra (Portugal), and other ensembles.

She has collaborated with renowned musicians, including Yuri Bashmet, Denis Matsuev, Alexander Sladkovsky, Ekaterina Mechetina, and Dmitry Yurovsky.

She has taken part in festivals such as:

  • the Winter International Arts Festival in Sochi;
  • Yuri Bashmet’s International Music Festival in Khabarovsk;
  • «Stars on Baikal»;
  • «Denis Matsuev and Friends»;
  • Crescendo;
  • «Sulle vie del Prosecco» («On the Prosecco Routes», Italy);
  • the Osaka International Mandolin Festival (Japan), and others.

Since 2015 she has taught in the Department of Folk String Instruments at the Gnesin Russian Academy of Music (from 2024 the Department of Guitar, Domra, and Balalaika).

She gives masterclasses at the «Tavrida» All‑Russian Youth Educational Forum, within projects of the Yuri Bashmet Educational Centre, the «Class from the Maestro» project supported by the «Art, Science and Sport» Foundation, and the «New Names» creative school.

She serves on the juries of performance competitions.

She is the director of the «Anthology of the Domra» project at the Gnesin Russian Academy of Music.

In 2020 E. N. Mochalova received a letter of gratitude from the Minister of Culture of the Russian Federation.
