Biography

In 2004 he graduated with distinction from the Faculty of History, Theory, and Composition of the Gnesin State Musical College, where his teachers included Honoured Cultural Workers of Russia Viktor P. Sereda, Irina A. Pisarevskaya, Zinaida V. Gumenyuk, Boris G. Kopelevich, and others.

In 2009 he completed, with distinction, his studies in the Department of Sound Engineering at the Gnesin Russian Academy of Music under Professors Igor P. Veprintsev and Pavel K. Kondrashin, and also studied with Marina A. Soboleva, Vladimir N. Ivanov, Alexander L. Subbotin, and Svetlana N. Kruglikova.

He is a laureate of the All‑Russian Viktor Babushkin Student Recording Competition (2009, second prize) and of the Audio Engineering Society Student Recording Competitions (Munich 2009, third prize; London 2010, second prize).

He is currently completing an assistant traineeship at the Tchaikovsky Moscow State Conservatory in the speciality «Music Sound Engineering», and since 2005 has pursued an active professional career as a recording, live‑sound, and broadcast sound engineer.

Since 2010 he has taught in the Department of Sound Engineering and on preparatory courses at the Gnesin Russian Academy of Music, where he gives classes in Sound Engineering and Musical Acoustics, and he has also taught elective courses at the Gnesin State Musical College.

His students have repeatedly won prizes at All‑Russian and international recording competitions.

Alexander V. Mikhlin has worked as a sound engineer, systems engineer, and technical specialist in a wide range of studios and concert venues, including:

  • the Pavel Slobodkin Centre;
  • Studios 1 and 5 of the Moscow State Recording House;
  • the Svetlanov Hall and Chamber Hall of the Moscow International House of Music;
  • the Yauza Palace Theatre and other venues.

He is currently Head of the Sound Department at the Stanislavsky Electrotheatre.

He has produced dozens of CD releases.

In studio and live settings he has collaborated with the State Symphony Orchestra «Novaya Rossiya», the Radio and Television Orchestra, the Boyan Orchestra, the ensemble «Russkaya mandolina», the Rusquartet string quartet, the show orchestra «Russky stil», Sergey Zakharov, Nadezhda Babkina, and many others.

He has contributed to the production of soundtracks for feature films including «Attraction», «Salyut‑7», «Eternal Life», «Kholop», and «T‑34».

Alexander V. Mikhlin has published a number of articles in the journal «Zvukorezhisser» and on the professional portal Prosound.ixbt.com.

Competition distinctions:

  • winner, Audio Engineering Society Student Recording Competition, AES126 Convention, Munich, 2009;
  • winner, Audio Engineering Society Student Recording Competition, AES128 Convention, London, 2010;
  • winner, All‑Russian Viktor Babushkin Competition of Student Creative Works, Moscow, 2009;
  • laureate of the international award for the best recording of Russian classical music «Chisty zvuk» (Pure Sound), 2021, first prize in the Opera category.

He is the organiser of the Gnesin Sound Workshops series of masterclasses (2015–2017).
