Biography

Academician of the International Academy of Informatization, President of the Association of Music Educational Institutions, member of the National Accreditation Council, and Chair of the Coordinating Council for Education in the field of Art and Culture of the Ministry of Education and Science of Russia.

She graduated from the Azerbaijan State Conservatory with a degree in Choral Conducting.

From 1972 to 1984 she served as Deputy Director of the Music College in Elektrostal, Moscow Region.

From 1984 to 2004 she headed the Department of Music Education and served as Deputy Head of the Directorate of Science and Education of the Ministry of Culture of the Russian Federation.

From 2004 to 2008 she was Deputy Head of the Directorate for Cultural Heritage, Arts Education, and Science of the Federal Agency for Culture and Cinematography.

In March 2008 she was elected Rector of the Gnesin Russian Academy of Music.

In 2009 Galina V. Maiarovskaya was awarded the honorary title «Honoured Artist of Russia».

In 2019, pursuant to the Presidential Decree of 23 August 2019 No. 392, she was awarded the Order of Friendship of the Russian Federation for her significant contribution to the development of Russian culture and art and for many years of fruitful work.

Also in 2019, by Order of the Ministry of Culture of the Russian Federation No. 03‑KF‑301019 of 30 October 2019, she was appointed President of the Gnesin Russian Academy of Music on the basis of the minutes of the meeting of the Academic Council of the Gnesin Russian Academy of Music (No. 4 of 29 October 2019).

In 2024, in accordance with Presidential Decree of 8 December 2024 No. 1037, Galina V. Maiarovskaya was awarded the Order of Honour for her outstanding contribution to the development of Russian culture and art and for many years of fruitful activity, and by Order of the Ministry of Culture of the Russian Federation of 24 October 2024 No. 04‑KF‑241024 she was reappointed President of the Gnesin Russian Academy of Music on the basis of the decision of the Academy’s Academic Council of 1 October 2024 (minutes No. 4).

Galina V. Maiarovskaya serves as:

  • Head of the Working Group on Arts Education of the CIS Executive Committee;
  • a federal expert on the quality of professional education for Rosobrnadzor;
  • a member of the Higher Education Working Group of the Ministry of Education and Science of Russia on Federal State Educational Standards;
  • a member of the Government Commission of the Russian Federation for UNESCO Affairs.

She is one of the most respected figures in Russian musical art and arts education and the author of numerous articles on issues in the field of arts education in Russia.

She has been honoured with the badge «Distinguished Worker of Secondary Vocational Education», the Medal of the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Poland «For Services to Polish Culture», the medal «For Contribution to the Development of Education» of the encyclopaedia «Gifted Children – the Future of Russia», the medals «Veteran of Labour» and «In Commemoration of the 850th Anniversary of Moscow», the badge of the USSR Ministry of Culture «For Excellent Work», a certificate of honour from the Executive Committee of the Commonwealth of Independent States, the medal and diploma of the All‑Russian Public Movement «For the Preservation of the People», the Order «Service to Art» 1st Class, the medal «For Cooperation in the Field of Culture between Russia and Iceland», and the Highest International Order «20 Years in United Nations Cooperation».
