Манистина Елена Александровна

Biography

A singer (mezzo‑soprano), Honoured Artist of Russia and soloist of the Bolshoi Theatre of Russia.

She was born in Saratov into a family of singers.

She graduated fr om the Saratov Music College in the class of Honoured Teacher of Russia L. S. Kiseleva, then continued her studies at the L. V. Sobinov Saratov State Conservatory in the class of Professor L. V. Belova, Honoured Artist of Russia. She completed her training at the Moscow Tchaikovsky State Conservatory in the class of Professor Irina Arkhipova, People’s Artist of the USSR, wh ere she also finished her postgraduate course.

She is a laureate of many competitions, including:

  • Operalia, founded by Plácido Domingo (First Prize);
  • the Bülbül International Competition (First Prize);
  • the International Tchaikovsky Competition (Second Prize);
  • the International Opera Singers’ Competition in Beijing (Second Prize);
  • the Francisco Viñas Competition (Third Prize);
  • the M. I. Glinka Competition (Third Prize), among others.

While still a first‑year student at the Saratov Conservatory she became a soloist of the Saratov Academic Opera and Ballet Theatre. From 1999 she was a soloist of the Stanislavsky and Nemirovich‑Danchenko Moscow Music Theatre, and since 2002 she has been a soloist of the Bolshoi Theatre of Russia.

Combining performances in Russia with a successful international career, she has appeared at major opera houses such as:

  • the Opéra National de Paris (Grand Opéra);
  • Théâtre du Châtelet (Paris);
  • the Metropolitan Opera (New York);
  • the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden (London);
  • the opera houses of Bordeaux, Marseille, Nice, Monte Carlo, Dublin, Barcelona, Trieste, Brussels, Washington, Toronto, Santiago, Munich, Frankfurt, and many others.

She has sung leading roles from the international mezzo‑soprano repertoire under many distinguished conductors and stage directors, and her repertoire also includes a wide range of chamber music.

In recent years she has combined teaching with her work at the Bolshoi and with tours throughout Russia and abroad.
