In 1969, he graduated with honors fr om the Ippolitov-Ivanov Music College, and in 1974, also with honors, from the Gnesin State Musical Pedagogical Institute (now the Gnesin Russian Academy of Music), wh ere he studied in the class of V. P. Shteyman.
Since 1977, he has been a faculty member at the Gnesin Russian Academy of Music, teaching in the Department of Woodwind and Percussion Instruments.
From 1981 to 2003, he served as principal timpanist and section leader of the percussion group for the Academic Symphony Orchestra of the Moscow State Philharmonic.
In 2003, D. M. Lukyanov accepted an invitation to lead the percussion section of the Russian National Orchestra under the direction of Mikhail Pletnev.

Lukyanov is distinguished by his virtuoso technical mastery of percussion instruments, a precise sense of musical style, the seriousness and depth of his interpretations, and a creative, passionate approach to his work», says People’s Artist of the USSR, State Prize laureate, and Professor V. N. Minin, reflecting on his collaboration with Lukyanov.
Devoting significant attention to pedagogy and the methodology of percussion instruction, D. M. Lukyanov has authored a number of methodological works, collections of etudes, transcriptions of pieces originally written for other instruments, and original compositions for solo and ensemble percussion:
- «Developing Motor Polyrhythmic Skills in Percussion Training» (Experimental study), deposited manuscript, Russian State Library, Moscow, 1986;
- «Characteristics of Basic Movement Patterns for Four-Mallet Playing on Two-Row Percussion Instruments» (Educational manual).
D. M. Lukyanov’s compositions include «Rhythmic Dialogues», «Etudes for Timpani», «Etudes for Xylophone», «Sketch and Fugue» for percussion quartet, «Rudiment Scatter» for percussion sextet, and «Suite» for piano and percussion (co-authored with N. Rogachev).
In 2009, the Moscow-based publisher «Kompozitor» released two collections of Dmitry Lukyanov’s works: «Pieces for Percussion Ensemble» and «Exercises and Etudes for Timpani».
Commenting on D. M. Lukyanov’s performance and pedagogical career, People’s Artist of the Russian Federation, Professor T. A. Dokshizer noted: «Dmitry Mikhailovich Lukyanov is a bright and rare personality among orchestral musicians. His professionalism, competence, integrity, and intelligence distinguish him as one of the leading figures in the performance and pedagogical arts of our country. His contributions in both fields cannot be overstated».
Honored Artist of the Russian Federation, Doctor of Art History, Professor and Head of the Department of Interdisciplinary Specializations for Musicologists at the Tchaikovsky Moscow State Conservatory, V. N. Kholopova, noted the «exceptionally successful and fruitful work of D. M. Lukyanov in the pedagogical, performing, and methodological fields». «Dmitry Mikhailovich Lukyanov», she writes, «is a well-known pedagogue and performing musician who has earned a solid reputation as the "father of laureates", a brilliant soloist, and the author of progressive methodological works».
D. M. Lukyanov has participated in numerous CD recordings for leading global record labels, including Deutsche Grammophon, Virgin Classics, PentaTone Classics, and others.
Among D. M. Lukyanov’s students are soloists and artists of Russia’s leading orchestral ensembles, including over 20 laureates of All-Union, All-Russian, and international competitions, 15 of whom are first-prize winners.

D. M. Lukyanov has repeatedly conducted professional development courses for teachers in Moscow and numerous educational institutions across various regions of Russia. On October 27, 2017, he presented a course titled «Analysis of Historical Gaps in Children’s Percussion Education» (Directorate of Educational Programs in the Field of Art, Moscow). On November 21, 2017, he conducted a course titled «Multi-percussion: Fundamentals of Performance Technique and Methods for Its Improvement» (Directorate of Educational Programs in the Field of Art, Moscow).
In 2020, D. M. Lukyanov was awarded a Letter of Gratitude from the Russian Academy of Education.
