Biography

Folk singer, teacher, and public figure.

In 1973 she graduated from the M. M. Ippolitov‑Ivanov Music College (class of V. Ye. Klodnina), and in 1985 from the Gnesin State Music and Pedagogical Institute (now the Gnesin Russian Academy of Music, class of Professor L. V. Shamina).

In 1973 she won a competitive audition for the Pyatnitsky State Russian Folk Choir.

From 1978 to 2004 she was a soloist with Mosconcert.

Since 2004 she has been a soloist of the Moscow State Folklore Music Theatre «Russkaya Pesnya».

She was a diploma winner at the All‑Russian Folk‑Song Performers’ Competition (1979) and a laureate of the 1st Moscow Variety Artists’ Competition (1979). From 1985 to 1995 she created and hosted the radio programme «Muzykalny teremok».

Since 1986 she has taught at the Gnesin Russian Academy of Music, and has been a Professor there since 2011. Over her years at the Academy Anna P. Litvinenko has trained a whole generation of distinguished folk singers who continue the development of Russian folk‑singing traditions.

Anna P. Litvinenko has always combined teaching with an active performing career. She has appeared on Russia’s most prestigious stages and has repeatedly represented Russian art both at home and abroad; audiences in more than fifty countries have applauded her performances.

She works closely with leading Russian orchestras, including:

  • the N. P. Osipov National Academic Russian Folk Orchestra;
  • the Russian Television and Radio Orchestra;
  • the Russian Folk Instrument Ensemble named after Zykina;
  • folk‑instrument orchestras of Novosibirsk, Chelyabinsk, Krasnodar, Kazan, and other cities.

Her performing career spans forty years, and her teaching experience more than thirty.

Her repertoire is wide and varied. Anna Litvinenko’s voice is well known to radio and television audiences; she has made more than three hundred recordings for the All‑Union Radio archives, and has released LPs and CDs of folk songs and romances.

The press has highly praised her contribution to the preservation and development of Russia’s folk culture. In her interpretations both traditional folk songs and works by contemporary composers acquire a vivid national colour and win over listeners of all ages through their sincerity and high artistic standard. Anna P. Litvinenko has developed her own distinctive manner of performing Russian art‑song romances in a style close to folk singing.

In 1994 she was awarded the title Honoured Artist of the Russian Federation, and in 2002 the title People’s Artist of the Russian Federation.

Anna P. Litvinenko regularly serves on juries of major vocal competitions. She shares her rich artistic and pedagogical experience in masterclasses and publications.
