Biography

He graduated from the Leningrad Conservatory in 1964 and completed postgraduate studies in 1966. He is a laureate of the All‑Union Competition (First Prize) and of international competitions in Prague (Second Prize), Budapest and Munich (First Prize).

He has been a soloist with the orchestra of the Mariinsky Theatre (1960–1968), the USSR State Symphony Orchestra under Evgeny Svetlanov (1968–1989), the St Petersburg Symphony Orchestra (1989–1992) and the Orchestre National de France (1992–2006). He has served on the juries of international competitions in Frankfurt, Munich, Geneva and Toulon.

His pupils are laureates of international competitions and hold solo positions in orchestras in Europe, Moscow and other Russian cities.

He has been a Professor at the St Petersburg Conservatory and the Gnesin Russian Academy of Music since 1979.
