Biography

In 1976 he graduated with distinction from the Military Conducting Faculty of the Moscow Tchaikovsky State Conservatory (conducting with Lev M. Ossovsky and Lev K. Svyatoslavsky, orchestration with Lev F. Dunayev), and in 1985 completed postgraduate studies at the same Faculty in Orchestration.

In 1991 he defended his Candidate of Art History dissertation «Stylistic Features of Orchestration for Wind Band in the Works of Soviet Composers of the 1940s–1980s (B. Kozhevnikov, Ye. Makarov, M. Gotlib, G. Kalinkovich, G. Salnikov)» under the supervision of Professor Lev F. Dunayev.

From 1982 to 2000 he taught at the Military Conducting Faculty of the Moscow Tchaikovsky State Conservatory and served as Deputy Head of the Department of Orchestration and Score Reading (1993–2000); from 1997 to 2002 he directed the wind orchestra and conducting class at the Gnesin State Music College.

From 2002 to 2011, from the day of its opening, he was Director of the Gnesin Russian Academy of Music branch in Khanty‑Mansiysk, Professor of the Instrumental Performance Department, and Artistic Director and Principal Conductor of the combined wind orchestra of the institution and the Khanty‑Mansiysk Residential College.

In 2005 and 2007 he initiated, served as Artistic Director of, and conducted the two International Youth Symphony Orchestra Festivals «Euroorchestra in Russia» (Khanty‑Mansiysk–Moscow), which fostered the professional growth of young performers and promoted symphonic music in the cities of Yugra and throughout Russia.

For his successful work and personal contribution to the cultural life of the autonomous district he has received numerous letters of thanks from the Academy’s administration, the Department of Culture and Arts, the Government, and the Governor of Khanty‑Mansi Autonomous Okrug–Yugra.[5]

In 2009, by Decree of the President of the Russian Federation, he was awarded the honorary title «Honoured Worker of Higher Education of the Russian Federation».

Since 2011 he has been Professor in the Orchestral Conducting Department of the Gnesin Russian Academy of Music, and from 2013 to 2015 he served as Dean of the Orchestral Faculty.

He is a conductor and arranger, author of numerous transcriptions, orchestrations, and arrangements performed by Russian and international concert wind ensembles.

Since the 1990s, alongside his teaching work, he has pursued an active conducting career with both wind and symphony orchestras, appearing in Moscow, Samara, Tolyatti, Nizhny Novgorod, Minsk, Almaty, Tbilisi, Saratov, Rostov‑on‑Don, Surgut, Nizhnevartovsk, Khanty‑Mansiysk, and other cities, as well as in the Czech Republic, Sweden, Norway, France, Malaysia, and the USA.

His concert activity and successful participation in Russian and international festivals and competitions have been recognised in the Russian and foreign press and marked by diplomas and laureate titles.
