Valeriy A. Grokhovskiy

Director of Gnesin Music College; Dean of Pop and Jazz Music faculty; Vice‑Rector for Secondary Vocational and Pre‑Vocational Education | Merited Artist of the Russian Federation

Гроховский Валерий Александрович

Biography

He was born into the family of the well‑known composer, musician, and conductor Alexander Grokhovsky and began music studies at the age of six.

Alongside his general education he attended the seven‑year music school attached to the Gnesin State Music College; after graduating from the school he entered the College itself and later the Gnesin Institute.

During his studies he undertook serious work on jazz, its theory and performance practice, and alongside classical works performed a wide range of jazz repertoire.

After completing his assistant traineeship in 1989, Vladislav Grokhovsky continued an active concert career. He gained wide recognition as a classical pianist after his appearance at the International Ferruccio Busoni Competition in Bolzano (Italy) in 1989, where he was awarded a high prize and attracted the attention of leading musical circles.

The subsequent invitation in 1991 from the University of Texas at San Antonio to take up a professorship in piano further confirmed his high professional standing. After more than ten successful years of teaching at this American university, he decided to return to Russia in order to focus more deeply on composition and, above all, on performance.

In addition to his distinguished career as a pianist, Grokhovsky has worked extensively in film. His music for the films The Contemplators (USA), Aphrodisia (France), My Gradiva (Russia–USA), The Institute of Marriage (USA–Russia–Costa Rica), and for the TV series Real Life, Objekt 11, Prediction, The Ugly Duckling, The Sound of the Silver Stream, The Last Victim, and Love Without Unnecessary Words testifies to the breadth of his talent as a composer and arranger.

To date he has recorded more than twenty albums of classical and jazz music, some of them released by the renowned label Naxos Records.

A few years ago, at Metropolis Studios in London, he recorded several albums of classical works by Bach, Mozart, Mendelssohn, and Gershwin in jazz arrangements, in collaboration with legendary contemporary jazz musicians Ron Carter (double bass) and Billy Cobham (drums).

In mid‑December 2013 Grokhovsky made his debut at New York’s world‑famous Carnegie Hall with a popular programme of Christmas music.

In 2017 he received the Moscow City Government Prize in Literature and Art in the category Popular Music, and in 2020 he was awarded a Certificate of Honour from the Ministry of Culture of the Russian Federation.

In addition to performances in Western countries, where his name has long been known, Grokhovsky appears with increasing frequency on stages throughout Russia, where audiences of classical and jazz music have come to appreciate his sparkling virtuosity and distinctive interpretative style.
