Associate Professor of Choral Conducting Department

Biography

She was born in Moscow in 1978. In 1997 she graduated with distinction from the Gnesin State Music College (Conducting and Choral Department, class of Honoured Worker of Culture of the RSFSR S. A. Borodin and Honoured Worker of Culture of the Russian Federation V. K. Gerasimova).

She received her higher musical education at the Gnesin Russian Academy of Music, studying in the Choral Conducting Department (1997–2002, class of Professor V. I. Sorokin) and in the Solo Academic Singing Department (2001–2005, class of Professor E. B. Obolenskaya, Honoured Worker of Higher Education of the Russian Federation).

From 2008 to 2011 she pursued postgraduate studies at the Gnesin Russian Academy of Music under Professor Irina S. Stogniy, Candidate of Art History, defending her Candidate’s thesis in 2011 on «The Artistic World of Yuri M. Butsko’s Choral Works of the 1980s and 1990s».

Owing to the comprehensive musical training she received from her distinguished teachers, N. Yu. Filatova has gone on to develop a career in several fields. Since 2005 she has combined performing and teaching with composition and scholarly work.

She has taught in the Choral Conducting Department of the Gnesin Russian Academy of Music since 2013, having previously worked as a voice teacher at the A. K. Lyadov Children’s Music School.

In 2009 she received an Honorary Diploma from the Moscow Department of Culture «For Significant Contribution to the Musical and Aesthetic Education of the Younger Generation».

From 2007 to 2009 she worked with the Russian Spiritual Theatre «Glas», combining the posts of choir director, vocal coach, and solo singer.

N. Yu. Filatova maintains an active solo recital career and also performs as soloist with the instrumental ensemble «Dobroye serdtse» («Kind Heart»), which she founded. The ensemble has recorded the CDs «Conversations» and «Kind Songs», featuring vocal works by Russian composers and her own compositions.

Since 2007 she has been a member of the MOST Composers’ Association of the Moscow Union of Composers.

Her output consists predominantly of vocal and choral works, including:

  • a cantata for choir, soloists, and folk orchestra;
  • a choral cycle for children’s (women’s) choir;
  • sacred choral pieces;
  • arrangements of folk songs;
  • two vocal cycles for soprano and piano;
  • art songs (romances);
  • songs;
  • vocal works for children.

Her work as a composer and performer has been recognised with several awards, including the Grand Prix of the 2nd International Competition «Contemporary Art and Education» (Composer‑Performer category).

N. Yu. Filatova is a diploma‑winner of the 3rd All‑Russian A. P. Petrov Composers’ Competition, the «Russian Music of the 21st Century for Children and Young People: Choral Laboratory» Composers’ Competition, and the Open Competition of Children’s and Youth Creativity in the Sphere of Orthodox Culture «Holy Symbols of Russia».

Her research focuses on contemporary Russian vocal and choral music, and she is the author of articles on the work of one of today’s leading composers, Yuri M. Butzko.
