Biography

In 1987 he entered and in 1991 graduated with honours from the Pop and Jazz Department of the Gnesin State Music College, majoring in saxophone (class of S. K. Rezantsev).
In 1991 he entered and in 1996 graduated from the Gnesin Russian Academy of Music, majoring in saxophone (class of Professor, People’s Artist of Russia M. K. Shaposhnikova).

In 1991 he took part in the All‑Russian Competition for Woodwind Performers, where he was awarded Third Prize (Leningrad), and also in the All‑Union Competition for Woodwind Performers, where he won Second Prize (Tambov).

Since 1993 Leonid Drutin has been a member of the saxophone quartet led by Honoured Artist of Russia A. V. Volkov.

In 2000 he took part in the International Competition «Selmer – Paris in Ukraine», where he became the winner and was awarded First Prize (Kyiv, Ukraine).

In 2003 he received the badge of the Ministry of Culture of the Russian Federation «For Achievements in Culture».

He has taught at the Gnesin State Music College since 1996.

Since 2016 he has taught at the Gnesin Russian Academy of Music. He is a regular visiting teacher at the Sirius Educational Centre. He takes part in the development of competition programmes and has served as a member of the jury of the Delphic Games for more than ten years. Among his graduates are Matvey Sherling, Anton Chekurov, Aleksey Leon‑Reis, Veronika Kozhukharova, Roman Markelov and Valentin Kovalev.

He is engaged in research and publishes articles:

  • «The Issue of Continuity in Teaching Saxophone in the School–College System», journal «World of Science, Culture and Education», 2016;
  • «Some Issues in Teaching Saxophone in Contemporary Russian Music Schools and Colleges», journal «Bulletin of the Moscow Institute of Public Administration and Law», 2016.

At present Leonid Drutin, alongside his teaching work, pursues an active concert career, collaborating with the Hermitage Soloists Ensemble under Honoured Artist of Russia A. Gindin, the Moscow Virtuosi Chamber Ensemble under People’s Artist of the USSR V. Spivakov, and the Moscow State Academic Chamber Choir under People’s Artist of the USSR V. Minin.

L. Drutin appears as a soloist in concerts with leading Russian orchestras, including the State Symphony Orchestra of Russia (conductor V. Yurovsky), the Moscow State Symphony Orchestra (conductor P. Kogan) and the Cinema Symphony Orchestra (conductor S. Skripka).

He gives masterclasses in Russia and abroad and serves on the juries of various music competitions.
