Biography

He began his musical studies as a pupil of a military music school.
He is a graduate of the Gnesin State Music College (class of Honoured Artist of the RSFSR I. A. Vasilevsky, 1958) and the Moscow State Tchaikovsky Conservatory (class of People’s Artist of Russia, Professor G. A. Orvid, 1964).

Since 1986 he has taught, and subsequently headed, the Wind and Percussion Department of the Gnesin State Music College.
From 1997 to 2006 he was Head of the Brass and Percussion Department at the Maimonides State Classical Academy.

Since 2007 he has taught at the Brass and Percussion Department of the Gnesin Russian Academy of Music.

His students include D. Murzov, O. Silyayev, A. Royzen, Ya. Alekseyev, S. Kravchenko, E. Guryev and K. Yakushev.

Masterclasses:

  • 1993–1994 – in the cities of Caracas and Coro (Venezuela);
  • 1996 – Taejon (Republic of Korea);
  • 1998 – at the Kyiv Conservatory and at music institutions in Kostroma, Arkhangelsk, Volgograd, Balashikha and Moscow.

Performance activities:

  • 1957–1961 – member of the Moscow Variety Orchestra;
  • 1961–1969 – member of the Orchestra of the State Academic Folk Dance Ensemble under I. A. Moiseyev;
  • 1969–1988 – member of the Bolshoi Theatre Orchestra.

He is co‑author of the All‑Russian curriculum for the specialisation «Wind and Percussion Instruments» for music colleges and has participated in the development of a new generation of state educational standards for secondary vocational education.

He served on the jury of the 22nd International Competition‑Festival «Musica classica» (Moscow Region, Ruza, 18 November 2017). He was Chairman of the jury of the Open Festival for Young Trumpeters named after N. V. Berdyev (Moscow, 20–23 December 2017) and gave a masterclass at the Winter Creative School «Trumpeter on Horseback» (Moscow, 4–7 January 2018).

His publications include the article «In Memory of a Teacher. The 125th Anniversary of the Birth of I. A. Vasilevsky» (Orkestr magazine, 20 October 2017), and a paper presented at the All‑Russian Research and Practical Conference «Current Issues in Wind Performance», published in the conference proceedings as «Scales and Etudes: The Trumpeter’s Daily Practice» (Yekaterinburg, 24 November 2017).
