Диев Андрей Борисович

Biography

Andrey Borisovich Diev (born 1958) is a Russian pianist, Professor at the Moscow State Tchaikovsky Conservatory, and Honored Artist of Russia (1995).

Andrey Borisovich Diev was born on July 7, 1958, in Minsk, into a family of distinguished musicians: his father was a composer, conductor, and teacher, and his mother a pianist and pedagogue who had studied with Heinrich Neuhaus. His first piano lessons came from his grandmother. Diev began his formal musical education in 1965 at the Gnesin Special School of Music.

In 1973, he transferred to the Central Music School at the Moscow Conservatory to study with Professor Lev Nikolaevich Naumov, with whom he continued his education later on.

In 1975, Diev entered the Moscow Conservatory, graduating in 1981. In 1985, he completed a postgraduate assistantship there.

Andrey Diev is a soloist of the Moscow State Academic Philharmonic. In 1995, he was awarded the title «Honored Artist of Russia.»

He is a vivid representative of the Russian piano school of the 20th century. His artistry harmoniously blends noble expressiveness with virtuosic brilliance, romantic impulse with intellectual depth, and a diversity of interpretations with a profound analytic approach to the works he performs.

Andrey Diev made his Moscow debut at the age of seventeen, performing Grieg’s Piano Concerto with the State Symphony Orchestra. "The Daily Telegraph" (UK) wrote that «Andrey Diev possesses a wide interpretative range.» His repertoire spans four centuries of music — from Bach, Scarlatti, and Soler to contemporary composers. He pays particular attention to the works of Chopin, Scriabin, Debussy, Prokofiev, Rachmaninoff, and Messiaen.

Diev is also active as a chamber performer, with over thirty piano concertos in his repertoire. He successfully combines an active concert career with teaching at the Moscow Conservatory.

Among his students are many renowned pianists and prizewinners of international competitions, including Eduard Kunz, Alexander Panfilov, Andrey Korobeinikov, Pavel Dombrovsky, Dmitry Onishchenko, Ilya Ramlav, Daria Kiseleva, Ivan Koshcheyev, and others.

Andrey Diev is the author of original transcriptions of a number of popular classical works by composers such as de Falla, Prokofiev, and Shostakovich.

His discography includes recordings of unprecedented scope — all 24 Preludes by Rachmaninoff, all 24 Preludes by Debussy, and 90 Preludes by Scriabin. The recording of Scriabin’s 90 Preludes became part of the large-scale project «Anthology of the Piano Prelude of the 20th Century».
