Biography

Sergei Alekseevich Chukov is an Honoured Worker of Higher Education of the Russian Federation, Professor, and a 1971 graduate of the Choral Conducting Department of the Gnesin State Musical‑Pedagogical Institute. He studied in the classes of A. A. Yurlov and B. N. Ananyin, and completed his assistant‑traineeship under V. N. Minin.

Sergei Alekseevich began his teaching career in 1963 as a music teacher in Moscow secondary schools. He later worked as a chorus master and teacher of special subjects with the Moscow Boys’ Choir Chapel under V. A. Sudakov, served as chorus master of the first Chamber Choir founded by Sudakov at the Moscow Choral Society and the Gnesin Institute, and then as chorus master of the Moscow Chamber Choir founded by V. N. Minin, while also directing other choral ensembles.

One important stage in Chukov’s artistic career was his work in Ecuador (1978–1982) as a teacher and head of the choral class. With the choirs of the Conservatory in Loja and the Provincial Council Choir, which he created on the basis of the national conservatory, he gave more than one hundred concerts and took part in national and international festivals.

He was invited by A. A. Yurlov to join the Choral Conducting Department of the Gnesin Institute in 1971.

In 1990 he played an active role in establishing the Choral Conducting Department at the M. M. Ippolitov‑Ivanov State Musical‑Pedagogical Institute.

S. A. Chukov is the author of articles on choral performance, teaching aids for university students, and curricula in choral disciplines.

From 1991 to 2012 he served as Dean of the Orchestral Faculty.

Since 2012 he has headed the Choral Conducting Department at the Gnesin Russian Academy of Music.
