Biography

Head of the Department of Chamber Ensemble and String Quartet and Chair of the Artistic Council of the Gnesin Russian Academy of Music.

A graduate of the Piano Faculty of the Moscow Conservatory (class of Professor Ya. I. Zak and Professor M. V. Milman), he completed his postgraduate studies under Professor E. V. Malinin. After graduating from the Conservatory he began an active concert career and, as a soloist and member of Moskontsert ensembles, toured more than one hundred cities across the Soviet Union, as well as in Europe and America. Numerous archive recordings featuring I. A. Chernyavsky have been made for All‑Union Radio and Central Television, and several CDs have been released.

At various times I. A. Chernyavsky has taught at the Moscow State Schnittke Institute of Music and College, at the Gnesin College of Music, and at the Maimonides State Classical Academy.

Since 1981 he has taught in the Department of Chamber Ensemble at the Gnesin Russian Academy of Music. His students include winners of all‑Russian and international competitions, teachers at leading higher music‑education institutions, and holders of honorary artistic and academic titles.

From 1999 to 2002 I. A. Chernyavsky served as Artistic Director of the Music and Philharmonic Centre of the Gnesin Russian Academy of Music.

I. A. Chernyavsky is a member of organising committees and juries of many regional, all‑Russian and international performance competitions, including the Delphic Games, and a member of the commission responsible for preparing and conducting the Thirteenth International Tchaikovsky Competition.

He is one of the initiators of the creation of the Moscow Musicians’ Union and a member of its Board, as well as a member of the Presidium of the Moscow Music Society.

He is actively engaged in research and is the author of numerous articles and reviews. In 1999 his book «Forgotten Pages in the History of Russian Chamber Music of the First Half of the Twentieth Century» was published, the result of many years of scholarly work.
