Biography

Performer (bayan), teacher.

He was born in 1978 in Kuznetsk, Penza Region. He received his professional training at the Kuznetsk Music College (now College) in the class of Honoured Cultural Worker of the Russian Federation V. P. Altukhov.

In 2002 he graduated from the Gnesin Russian Academy of Music in the class of People’s Artist of Russia, Professor F. R. Lips, and in 2004 completed a postgraduate assistant traineeship there under F. R. Lips.

He is a laureate of the First All‑Russian I. Ya. Panitsky Performers’ Competition in Saratov (1995, Special Prize for the best performance of Panitsky’s music) and of international competitions in Lanciano (Italy, 1999), Klingenthal (Germany, 2000), Moscow (2000), Chelyabinsk (2001), Arrasate (Spain, 2001) and Castelfidardo (Italy, 2003).

Since 2004 he has taught at the Folk Instruments Department of the Gnesin Russian Academy of Music.

He maintains an active concert career and, in addition to solo recitals, collaborates extensively with:

  • major symphony orchestras – the Tchaikovsky Grand Symphony Orchestra, the State Symphony Orchestra «Novaya Rossiya»;
  • choral ensembles – the A. A. Yurlov State Academic Capella of Russia, the Moscow Conservatory Chamber Choir;
  • folk instrument orchestras and ensembles – the N. P. Osipov National Academic Russian Folk Orchestra, the N. N. Nekrasov Academic Russian Folk Orchestra, the State Academic Russian Folk Ensemble Rossiya named after L. G. Zykina;
  • renowned soloists and conductors – N. Nekrasov, Y. Bushkov, I. Dronov, M. Pekarsky, M. Rakhlevsky, B. Voron, D. Shapovalov and others.

He is a regular participant in major music forums, including:

  • the annual international festivals «Moscow Autumn» and «Bayan and Bayanists»;
  • the International Summer Courses for New Music in Darmstadt (2010);
  • the Venice Biennale (2011).

He has made recordings for radio and television and is founder and artistic director of the soloists’ ensemble Klassik‑Forum.

His repertoire includes works by the great composers of the past, Russian classics, twentieth‑century music and compositions by contemporary authors such as A. Schnittke, S. Gubaidulina, E. Denisov, A. Pärt, A. Kholminov, K. Volkov, Y. Podgaits, M. Bronner and T. Sergeyeva.

He has given first performances of:

  • Sonata No. 4 «Gondla» by Kirill Volkov, dedicated to him;
  • Diptych «Skladen» for bayan and organ by Kirill Volkov;
  • Sonata No. 1 by Alexander Zhurbin.

He has recorded four CDs:

  • «Sonata»;
  • «Phantasmagorias»;
  • «After Reading»;
  • «Mirror».

Within his teaching and research activity he is the author of modern course syllabuses, articles and tutorials, arrangements and transcriptions, and serves as editor and compiler of music publications. He regularly sits on juries for performance competitions at all levels and gives masterclasses in Russian cities and abroad.

His students include interregional, all‑Russian and international competition laureates R. Demayev, R. Akchurin, G. Seredin and A. Shestakov.
