Biography

In 1981 he graduated from the Pop and Jazz Department of the Gnesin Music and Pedagogical College, in 1990 from the Gnesin Institute, and in 2004 from postgraduate studies at the Maimonides State Classical Academy.

He began playing at the age of 11 in the Loktev Children’s Ensemble and in 1976 toured with the group in the Netherlands.

His jazz debut took place in 1984 in Vladislav Kadersky’s big band «Vecherniy Arbat».

From 1986 to 1988 he played with German Lukyanov’s «Kadans», and from 1989 to 1991 in the Exemplary Demonstration Orchestra big band of the KGB. He later worked with Sergey Zhylin’s big band «Fonograf» (1991), Alexey Kozlov’s «Arsenal» (1999) and Andrey Razin’s group «Vtoroye Priblizheniye» (1999).

He has also performed with the group «Paporotnik» (2003–2006), «AMARAS» and others. Since 1996 he has worked regularly with Sergey Manukyan, and since 2001 has played in the big band of the Ministry of Justice of Russia.

With various ensembles he has appeared at many Russian festivals, as well as in the USA (San Francisco, 1990), Germany (Passau, 1990) and Bulgaria (1999, 2004).

Since 1983 he has been engaged in teaching (drums and percussion, rhythm, methodology, aesthetics).

He has taught at the Muradeli Children’s Music School (1983–1984), the Dunaevsky Music School (2001–2004) and the Gershwin Music School (2004–2008), and later at the Consort Jazz College, the Maimonides Academy and the Gnesin Russian Academy of Music.
